Choosing to brave another classic of '60s cinema, Burton's Planet Of The Apes stripped back his actors' performances to attempt a sort of realism. "From the beginning, we decided we wanted to weave more ape mannerisms into it, how they move and react and how they think. Not that we wanted to make them ape apes, but we had to locate those areas where they connect to the human. When we were trying to figure out battle styles, we realised the way apes really move, they move like samurais in samurai movies. They've got this strength, and this quick and elegant but also sort of spastic macho kind of movement." Sadly, everyone hated the movie and its weird ending - but he's not wrong about the ape performances.
